Shanghai, five in the morning. I take the front seat of a taxi because I know this will be my last glance at the city. In a few hours I’m having a plane that will teleport me from here, like from a parallel universe – from a place where Europe seems only a distant, small continent, somewhere far away. With a slight surprise I notice that the cheerful taxi driver opens the window a bit and lights a cigarette as if nothing had happened. Although I’m not a smoker myself, I get carried away and without a word, I make a gesture asking if I can have one too since I am already sitting beside. Without thinking much a kind taxi driver smiles a bit and offers me one. And so we go further without a single word, in this perfect silence... me "from there” and a kind taxi driver "from here" – two people from two distant worlds who don’t need a common language to understand this moment ... The moment of silence of the waking city where a brisk breeze of the morning, falling through the open windows, promises another sun-scorched day, and a monumental city skyline around us, through which the sunrise is ineptly trying to break through. And I’m just thinking: yes, it's one of those moments that could last forever. That's why I capture this moment.
